What this can and cannot tell you
It can tell you exactly how a fixed offer compares with the capped rates Ofgem has published. It cannot tell you what the cap will be after those periods, because nobody has published that — and we will not pretend otherwise by projecting a number.
Fixing buys certainty. Whether that certainty is worth its price is the judgement the figures should inform.
Mistakes that change the answer
- Comparing a fixed unit rate against the capped unit rate while ignoring different standing charges.
- Forgetting exit fees on the fixed deal.
- Treating a forecast of future cap levels as a fact.
