Worked example

A household using 2,700 kWh of electricity a year at 26.3p per kWh pays about £710 for the energy itself. A 54p daily standing charge adds £197 over 365 days, giving roughly £907 a year, or about £76 a month.

Add gas at 11,500 kWh and 7.3p per kWh and the energy comes to about £840, plus around £106 of standing charge — so a dual-fuel household lands near £1,850 a year on those figures.

What this estimate does and does not include

The calculation is your usage multiplied by your unit rate, plus your standing charge across 365 days. It is the same arithmetic your supplier uses for the energy portion of the bill.

It does not include debt repayment on your account, account credit, discounts, feed-in or export payments, or any mid-year change in rates. If a price cap change falls partway through your year, run the figures for each period separately.

Mistakes that change the answer

Entering a monthly kWh figure in the annual box — multiply by twelve first, or use the monthly option.
Confusing your monthly direct debit with your actual cost. The direct debit is a smoothed estimate and can drift from what you really use.
Leaving the standing charge out. It is typically £150 to £250 a year per fuel on its own.
Using a unit rate from an old bill after a price cap change.

Why is my direct debit different from this figure?

A direct debit spreads an estimated year across twelve equal payments and is adjusted for any balance on your account. This calculator shows the underlying cost of the energy itself.

Where do I find my unit rate and standing charge?

Both are printed on any recent bill and shown in your supplier's app, usually as pence per kWh and pence per day.

Does this include VAT?

It works with the rates you enter. Bill rates are normally quoted including VAT, and the VAT treatment for each fuel and period is set out on our methodology page.
