The formula

kWh = cubic metres × volume correction (1.02264) × calorific value ÷ 3.6. This calculator uses a standard approximate calorific value of 39.5 MJ/m³. The real value varies slightly by area and date and is printed on your bill, so your supplier's figure may differ slightly from the result here.

Mistakes that change the answer

  • Reading an imperial meter, which records hundreds of cubic feet, as if it were metric.
  • Including the red digits on the dial — they are decimals and suppliers ignore them.
  • Using a calorific value from a different region without checking the bill.

Why is my bill in kWh when my meter is in m³?
Gas is sold by energy content, which varies slightly with the mix delivered. The conversion accounts for it.
